How to clean with essential oils

STEP 1 – THANKS FOR ATTENDING

Wasn’t it so nice to not have to spend half an hour or more to get ready, find a babysitter for the kids, and travel somewhere to learn more about essential oils? Hopefully you are in your pj’s, enjoying a nice cup of something yummy, and waiting for us to get started!

Maybe you have heard about essential oils and wondered what all the fuss was about; or maybe you have started to use them in your home already; but whatever the reason you decided to attend, I am glad you are here.

STEP 2 – A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I’m a 42-year-old Mum to 3 teen boys who lives in Wagga Wagga NSW. I’m pretty much obsessed with interior decorating (I move my furniture around lots!), hence being brave enough to go on the TV show THE BLOCK 2011 with my sister. Since then I’ve been busily building my blog, consulting with clients and trying to stay on top of my health. I’ve had Crohn’s Disease since I was 18 years old. Last year I decided it was time to have colostomy surgery and now I permanently wear a bag. In that massive decision also came the head space to recognize I NEVER want to be that chronically ill EVER AGAIN. My poor husband couldn’t handle me frightening him every few months with hospital visits! I was over prescribed on antibiotics – I didn’t know any better. Soooo changes were needed. Then out of the blue, essential oils came in to my life. Since discovering the world of low-tox living I feel like I’ve truly changed my life. NO more putting extreme amounts of chemicals in and on my body. No more cleaning with potent concoctions. Read on and see what essential oils can do FOR YOU.

STEP 3 – NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

In today’s world we are surrounded by toxins – the air we breathe, the products we use, the things we eat. Endocrine disruptors (scented and artificial smells) are chemicals that can interfere with endocrine (or hormone) systems at certain doses. Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by hormone disruptors. The use of chemicals in our homes is something we CAN control.

Let’s talk about some NATURAL ingredients that we can use to make CHEAPER, safer cleaners.

Create your own safe and natural household cleaners with these supplies, many of which are probably sitting around your home already!

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES SHOPPING LIST:

  • Bicarb soda
  • Vinegar
  • Citric Acid
  • Sodium carbonate (washing soda)
  • Borax
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Natural dishwashing liquid like Castile
  • Salt
  • Foaming handwash
  • On Guard concentrate cleaner

Before we dive into some RECIPES you can try, let’s take a minute to talk about what essential oils are and why it is important to use a quality essential oil.

DōTERRA means gifts from the earth. These essential oils are 100% pure, ethical and sustainable goodness which are instantly and highly effective. Because of their antidepressant, stimulating, detoxifying, antibacterial, antiviral and calming properties, essential oils are a natural, safe and cost-effective therapy for several health concerns.

DōTERRA is the only company in the world that guarantees every bottle of oil is CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) free from fillers, herbicides, pesticides… any adulteration whatsoever. They are the most tested and transparent company in the world, and the only company that publicly releases results for every bottle.

We can clean with them, we can cook with them and we can take care of our moods.

STEP 4 – WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils.

These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant.

Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, protect plants, and play a role in plant pollination.

In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health care practices.

So essential oils:

  • Are naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds;
  • Are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants;
  • Protect plants against environmental threats and provide beneficial properties;
  • Are highly concentrated when distilled for purity, potency, and efficacy;
  • Have been used historically for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.

STEP 5 – EVERYDAY USE OF ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are great for CLEANING. You can also experience the many benefits of essential oils by using them to support overall health.

Here are the three ways to use them:

AROMATIC
• Essential oils, when diffused or inhaled, can be very stimulating, calming, or soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air.

TOPICAL
• Essential oils can be safely applied for massage or topical therapy.
• Their chemical structure enables them to pass through skin for an immediate systemic response.

THIRTY SECONDS to get into your bloodstream – THIRTY MINUTES to get through your entire body.

INTERNAL
• Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness.

STEP 6 – LITTLE STEPS

So you want to use essential oils to clean your home?

Put away your surgical masks and rubber gloves.

Cleaning just got a whole lot more fun! It is all about little steps! Pick a recipe to start with and try it out. See how you like it.

Before diving into some recipes, let’s talk about five main essential oils that are great for cleaning around the home.

STEP 12 – AROUND THE HOME

Let’s get started with some awesome cleaning recipes for around your home.

If you’re new to essential oils, you likely won’t be able to switch over to an all-oil cleaning arrangement right away, so remember the importance of small steps.

We are going to talk about some general CLEANING recipes first. Then we will move on to specific areas in our homes.

AIR FRESHENER

  • 1/2 tablespoon of bi-carb soda
  • 10 drops of essential oil (I use Purify because it’s so fresh!)
  • 500ml spray bottle

Directions

  • Put the bi-carb soda in a bowl and add essential oils
  • Mix well (the bi-carb will be lumpy)
  • Add about half the bi-carb soda and essential oil mixture to 1/2 cup of water and stir well
  • Add the water mixture to your spray bottle
  • Repeat 3-4
  • Fill the rest of the spray bottle with water
  • Shake well before using

Now spray on whatever you want! No nasties. Spray around your bedroom, mattress, couches, in the car, over the carpet and keep one in the toilet as an air-freshener.

WOOD POLISH
• 1/4 cup white vinegar
• 1/4 cup FCO
• 10 drops essential oil (e.g. Arborvitae, Lemon, Orange)

Add ingredients to an 250ml glass spray bottle. Spray to protect wood furniture and wood floors. Arborvitae is great for preserving wood.

HOMEMADE BLEACH
• 1/4 cup filtered water
• 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide (3% solution)
• 1/2 tbsp. real lemon juice
• 3 drops lemon essential oil

Add all ingredients to a100ml amber coloured glass bottle. Shake well. Lasts two to three months if stored out of sunlight.

GLASS CLEANER
• 1 1/2 cup white vinegar
• 1/2 cup filtered water
• 8 drops citrus essential oil (e.g. Lemon, Grapefruit)

Add ingredients to a 500ml dark coloured glass spray bottle.

OMFG MIRACLE SPRAY

Use this for EVERYTHING!

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups normal water
  • 150ml white vinegar
  • 30ml dishwashing liquid (I use Castile because it’s natural)
  • 15 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons sodium carbonate.

Directions – mix the sodium carbonate with the boiling water until dissolved, then mix in the rest of the ingredients. This made up roughly 1L.

HANDMADE DISINFECTANT WIPES

  • 1 roll of paper towel
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons FCO
  • 1 tablespoon of On Guard Foaming Hand Wash (or any organic dish washing liquid)
  • 3 drops On Guard essential oil
  • 3 drops Lemon Essential oil
  • 2 x air tight glass containers

Cut the paper towel in half with a bread knife and place in each container. Combine all the ingredients in a jug. Pour half of the liquid over one roll and the other over the second roll. You should have the right amount with no excess to spare. Seal each container and leave for 10 minutes. Turn the container over for another 10 minutes to let the moisture soak in. Remove the cardboard from the middle and they are ready to use.

FLOORS

  • 2 drops peppermint, half a cup of vinegar, fill bucket with hot water and mop.
  • OR add 1 tablespoon On Guard Concentrate Cleaner with hot water.

STEP 13 – IN THE KITCHEN

Benchtops, stinky garbage, dirty dishes, and greasy ovens can be a mighty task to clean. No more with the power of Essential Oils!

DISH SOAP
• 2 cup Castile Soap, unscented
• 20 drops Lime essential oil
• 8 drops Lemon essential oil
• 6 drops Citrus Bliss

Add ingredients to a mason jar. Secure a pump top by using a canning lid. Use one to two tbsp. to each load of dishes.

FRUIT AND VEGGIE WASH
• 1 cup filtered water
• 3/4 cup organic apple cider vinegar
• 1 tbsp. bi-carb soda
• 10 drops Lemon essential oil

Add Lemon essential oil to a 500ml glass spray bottle. Add bi-carb soda. Add water VERY SLOWLY. Spray on produce and let sit for a few minutes. Rinse well with cold water. Let dry.

ORANGE KITCHEN CLEANER
• Orange peels
• White vinegar
• 8 drops Tee Tree essential oil
• 8 drops On Guard

Soak orange peels in vinegar in a quart mason jar with a lid. Add 5 drops of Tea Tree and On Guard. Let sit for 2 weeks. Drain peel oil into a 500ml glass spray bottle.  Add remaining essential oils.

NON-TOXIC JIF

  • 3/4 cup bi-carb soda
  • 1/4 cup castile soap (buy online or from your local health food shop)
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 20 drops clove essential oil (you can halve that and add lemon as well). Clove oil has biological activities, such as antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidant properties.

Mix together to create a paste and store in a jar.

STEP 14 – DOING THE LAUNDRY

It’s time for some clean laundry! You’ll love using essential oils to freshen your laundry loads. Just add a few drops of one of these essential oils to your load to help create a fresh scent: Tea Tree, On Guard, Wild Orange, Lemon, or Purify.

For hard water or rust, add 1/2 cup Epsom salt as well as white vinegar.

FABRIC SOFTENER
• 1 cup salt
• 1 cup hot water
• 3 cups white vinegar
• 20 drops essential oil (I used Lavender)

Mix all together until the salt dissolves. That’s it! Ready to go straight in to the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine. Use on towels, sheets, clothes, anything. You can leave the essential oil out and just add a few drops to your machine as you go if you prefer to switch it up. This will make 1L.

ON GUARD LAUNDRY DETERGENT
Another great addition to your laundry room is this natural based, ultra-concentrated 6X laundry detergent that utilizes the power of the ON GUARD and bio-originated enzymes to target and lift stains for amazingly clean clothes.

This small bottle packs a punch with 10ml of this blend of essential oils and the ability to do up to 64 loads of laundry! It is colour safe for washable fabrics at all temperatures and is free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, and toxins, which makes it a safe choice for your family as well as the environment.

STRIP WASH (DIY NAPISAN)

Fill your sink or the bath (if you’re using the bath you may need more products) with hot water.

  • 2 tablespoons of sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda)
  • 1 tablespoon borax
  • 2 tablespoons of liquid detergent (you can use anything, but I do prefer low-tox)
  • I used a few drops of lemon essential oil because it brightens clothes

Let it soak for 2-4 hours, swishing it around occasionally. Then wring out, wash through your machine on a water only cycle. Repeat the soaking process again if you think it needs it.

STAIN SPRAY

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups normal water
  • 150ml white vinegar
  • 30ml dishwashing liquid (I use Castile because it’s natural)
  • 15 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons sodium carbonate

Directions – Mix the sodium carbonate with the boiling water until dissolved, then mix in the rest of the ingredients. This made up roughly 1L. So make a few spray bottles.

STEP 15 – IN THE BATHROOM

Gotta love cleaning those toilets, tubs, and tiles! If you thought it was impossible to clean well naturally, check out these all-natural bathroom cleaning alternatives!

SOFT SCRUB
• 3/4 bi-carb soda
• 1/4 c. liquid Castile Soap, unscented
• 1 tbsp. water
• 1 tbsp. white vinegar
• 5-10 drops Lemon essential oil

Combine soap and bi-carb. Add Water. Add essential oils and vinegar. Make in small batches. Store in glass jar with lid. Apply and let sit 10-15 minutes. Scrub.

TOILET BOMBS

  • 1 1/3 cup bi-carb soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1 teaspoon roughly of water (from a spray bottle)
  • 10 drops lavender
  • 10 drops peppermint
  • 10 drops lemon

Mix the bi-carb soda and citric acid together in a small bowl. Next, slowly add the water and essential oils to the mixture. I used a spray bottle to add the water – by misting it in to the mixture. It will fizz a little but that’s ok. You will need to move reasonably quick with the mixing.

When you can pinch the moisture together and it sticks, then it’s ready to go. If it’s sloppy and too runny and you will have to start again. Go light on the water because you can always add more. Press the mixture in to the trays. Let sit overnight.

HAND SOAP
• 2 tbsp. Castile Soap, unscented
• 1 tbsp. carrier Oil (e.g., Fractionated Coconut Oil)
• 1 tsp. Vitamin E Oil
• 10 drops ESSENTIAL OIL (e.g., Tea Tree, Lavender, Patchouli)

Pour soap and carrier oil into a foaming hand soap container. Add essential oil. Find your favourite! Add filtered water, leaving enough room for the pump. Use a quality plastic container or use a mason jar as we did for the dish soap recipe.

HAND CLEANSING SPRAY

  • 1 tablespoon Aloe Vera gel
  • 20 drops On Guard essential oil
  • Water

Mix into a 50ml glass spray bottle. Spray on hands at public restrooms, at the shops, and other places to keep hands clean.

MOULD SPRAY

Clove is by far the best antioxidant of all the essential oils. And antioxidants kill mould. Not mask it.

  • 250ml Glass spray bottle (it needs to be glass or even aluminium because the oils in contact with plastic can leach chemicals over time)
  • 30 drops Clove essential oil (only use 100% pure)
  • Teaspoon of witch hazel water (essential oils won’t distribute into the water on its own, but when diluted in the witch hazel or vodka, it will mix into the water).
  • Boiled and cooled water (tap water can harness bacteria, so make sure it’s distilled water).

Spray over area, leave for half an hour. Use elbow grease to actually remove the mould (scouring pad). Repeat a couple of times.

STEP 17 – THE POWER of AROMA

One of the most well-studied areas of aroma research is the effect of smell on EMOTIONS and MOOD.

For example, there is convincing evidence demonstrating that simply inhaling the AROMA of an ESSENTIAL OIL is effective for calming nervous or anxious feelings in a variety of settings.

The SMELL receptors located on the upper surface of the nasal cavity make direct links with the limbic system of the brain, an area that governs the body’s EMOTIONAL responses.

This close connection between AROMA and EMOTION becomes obvious in our everyday life as certain odours trigger memories or specific feelings. Some aromas directly impact mood (for example calming, balancing, or invigorating), while others trigger memories of a specific experience, often one tied to a strong emotion.

Intriguing new research has also helped us recognize that the benefits of AROMA extend far beyond just EMOTIONAL regulation.

In addition to influencing the limbic region of the BRAIN, olfactory centers are also intricately linked with the hypothalamus, an area of the BRAIN more familiarly nicknamed the “visceral control center” because it controls physiologic functions throughout the body. The hypothalamus exerts its POWERFUL influence by interacting directly with the pituitary gland, or “master gland,” a small gland located in the BRAIN.

The pituitary gland secretes hormones involved in the regulation of BLOOD PRESSURE, HUNGER and THIRST signals, THYROID function, SLEEP cycles, production of sexual HORMONES, and MEMORY, among other things.

Because of the direct link of the olfactory system to this area of the brain, AROMA is capable of interacting directly with the hypothalamus, influencing neurochemistry throughout the body, and, in turn, potentiating POWERFUL health outcomes.

There are many acceptable ways to use essential oils for their AROMATIC properties. One method is to DIFFUSE the oil into the air. Not only does diffusion make the oil accessible to the body, but research indicates that there are also AIR PURIFICATION benefits when diffusing oils.

When diffusing oils, use of cold air or hydrodiffusion is best because burning or heating essential oils can ALTER their delicate chemistry. If a diffuser is not available, simply DROPPING Essential Oils into the palm of the hand and then cupping around the nose and breathing deeply is a CONVENIENT METHOD for using essential oils at any time, in any situation.

STEP 18 – RETAIL or WHOLESALE PURCHASING

We have walked through the basic oils that would be a great addition to your cleaning closet. Let’s talk about how to get started!

I want you to get the BEST DISCOUNT for essential oils. You can save 25% on every purchase by having your own WHOLESALE MEMBERSHIP!

A Wholesale Membership is like ADAIRS or COSTCO: you pay a flat fee of $35 for the year. Whenever you need an essential oil, you can order it right from your own account. You can even qualify for more savings (10-30%) as a member.

If you plan on purchasing MORE THAN ONE oil for your family, then buying at WHOLESALE would be your BEST OPTION.

There is a Member REWARDS PROGRAM that you can participate in if you would like to EARN OILS for FREE.

When you purchase oils EACH MONTH, you can earn up to 30% BACK in points to use for FREE OILS.

Isn’t that FANTASTIC?

It’s called the LOYTALY REWARDS PROGRAM (LRP). Where you can get free product credits given to you for purchases made whilst on the Loyalty Rewards Program. The longer you participate the more credits you can earn. In fact, all the way up to 30% of your monthly Loyalty Rewards purchases.

Why do you need to keep buying dōTERRA products? Well apart from the fact they actually work, you don’t build up a resistance to them, and they metabolise after about 6 hours, therefore, to get the full benefits you have to use them daily.

OK, so you already have a wholesale account?? Or you’re just about to sign up? Remember a wholesale account ALREADY gives you 25% off retail pricing. So already you’re winning. But there’s a way to get MORE discounts and extra free product.

LRP works on a sliding scale. Set it up today and you’ll start receiving 10% of your purchases BACK in credits. BUT in 7 months’ time you could be getting another 25% of your purchases BACK, then 13+ you’ll be getting another 30% back. AMAZING!

STEP 20 – PRICE PER DROP

Making essential oils cleaning recipes not only helps to create a safe environment for you or your family, but it also is more affordable than buying from the store.

You can buy a pure and potent essential oil that only requires a few drops to create these amazing CLEANING recipes.

It is mind-blowing how INEXPENSIVE essential oils are when you break it down. Most of our bottles are 15ml. These bottles contain 250+ drops.

Let’s say you want to use 2 drops of Lavender essential oil to help freshen your laundry. You only spent $0.16 for multiple loads.

To make the kitchen cleaner, you are looking at a total cost of $0.80 for Tea Tree and $1.04 for On Guard in your entire 1L bottle! That’s what I call savings!

QUESTION – HOW MUCH WOULD YOUR FAVORITE OIL COST PER DROP (use this chart to find your oil http://www.dropsforwellness.com/CostperDrop.pdf)?

STEP 21 – HERE’S HOW TO ORDER

There are 2 options –

  1. Pay a $35 membership fee (like I mentioned above) and you will then have your own wholesale account where all products are 25% off. You can then select any products you like.
  2. OR buy an enrolment kit like the Home Essentials Kit where the $35 is already included (and it’s 20% off remember!).
